ETFs variety have expanded recently in Australia. In Australia, the ETFs started with Market Indices from main markets in the world, eg Dow, All Ords, Nikkei, etc. Then came the precious metals ETFs, then bonds and currencies ETFs.

You can get a list of available ETFs from
    www.ASX.com.au

There is a book called ETFs - But, Don't Hold which describes a strategy in investing/trading ETFs. Although it is US based, a lot of the strategies can be applied to Aussie ETFs. A summary of the main points in the ETF book is:

Basically it talks about identifying risk profile, then setting up a system where you can compare the relative strengths of ETF. On of the big bonus is there is a variety of online sites to keep track of these ETFs. It also a good strategy to manage risk, since holding ETFs for long time would not work.
