    All this is my opinion...

Good luck with getting insurance on the import...as i wrote, most car insurers run a mile from "grey" imports for the reason i noted above.

The staff on the desk inside the regular Insurance company can only go by the records they have access to to calculate a premium based on make model year. If the vehicle is not listed on their database their systems are unable to calculate a premium.

Try insuring your import with Coles or Woolworths for example where many people go as they are quite cheap...forget it.

I have a "grey" import,, and even as an Insurance Broker and I could not convince any of the Insurers I deal with on a regular basis to insure the vehicle. i had to go to a specialist Insurer and pay the appropriate premium.
    1) We should be free to import anything we want from Japan or any country with first world safety standards. its our own problem if spare parts have to be imported. Totally agree, and you can import your own car but you will pay duties on it.

    2) We should abolish Australian Design Rules. Don't agree with that or you will end up with rubbish Third World cars with zero safety feature and death traps for the uneducated.

    3) we should allow parallel importing. The dealers are spivs who have had it too good too long

Too hard to control...can you imagine the total chaos with people importing all sorts of cars from all over the world? That said, I know of many people who have imported their own cars after buying them over seas. But are you thinking of a sort of Amazon car dealer? Go onb line pick your car and accessories, then scroll over the the Paypal page and delivery details?
