Oh dear.
I've been to the States about a dozen times - huge country, >300m people, the vast majority law-abiding and ordinary people just "like you and me" - however the Media thrives on drama so "we" get the impression the place is a basket case.
It may be a basket case today, but it wasn't when my wife and I lived there - nor was it in the suburbs when we had previously visited (business) friends scattered across the country - and when I contact those same friends today about "hey, what the hell's going on" their response is along the lines of "oh, it's just the bloody TV and newspapers, you remember how "dramatic" they had to be to get ratings, make sales etc .....".
However, as you appear to be an armchair expert commenting from elsewhere (",,,in the highly unlikely event that I found myself in America,,,") I guess your ignorance can be forgiven.
