I would propose a third option of broadening our alliances with NZ, Pacific Islands, particularly Philippines and PNG, and SE Asian states including India...... which looks like the Govt has the same idea and making relations with these countries and acting with them in ocean exercises.

do we need a nuclear powered sub to do as you suggest in defence of our nation? we had a deal with the French for replacement subs with many of the capabilities required to match nuke subs.\, the only real difference was the energy source. imo we should have stuck with the French deal.

if any state decided they would attack Aus, with or without our US alliance, which is covered with ANZUS anyway, it would very likely result in a global holocaust with nuke missiles flying everywhere. so why do we really need the massively bigger cost of AUKUS when we could have had more subs for much less money?
