As for Russia, if Ukraine stayed neutral and didn't try to join NATO nothing would've happened. They didn't stay neutral and took a side, and now is the price they pay. I'm not saying what Russia did is right, but when you take a side, you make someone on the other side an enemy by default.

History has shown lesser powers that survived and fared most well through conflicts between major powers are those that didn't take sides and stayed their own course. All those ASEAN countries have dealt with China for millennia, they are no fool. It's just laughable you think you know more than them.
