LD i'm glad you cited deterrence as the central reason for ADF existing. And yours was a totally apt metaphor for deterrence.
that said, some subs could be useful but not against successive waves of hypersonic missiles.. white elephants never do.
there are many different effective structures for the ADF that could be deployed without white elephants. But not with America's involvement.
