ExxonMobil Australia's chairman Richard Owen told the Gippsland Times there would be more exploration of Bass Straits gas fields to ensure long term supplies to Victoria Tasmania and New South Wales..
He dismissed the likelihood of Esso selling gas for export as Liquefied Natural Gas from Gladstone as ExxonMobil was not involved in those projects.
" All our gas is sold into Australian markets, but I can't guarantee no molecule of gas from here does not end up in Queensland," he said.
"There is still a bright future for the Gippsland Basin, but we need to find more gas," he said. "We need to explore and invest.
"We think there is seven trillion cubic feet of gas in reserves in Bass Strait, a world class field," Mr Owen said.
