Had lunch yesterday with a former work colleague who got caught at Perth airport just as the shutdown was initiated (they'd already checked their bags in). He explained that, whilst initially p-off'd at Qantas for hiting customers like this, he did say that they were put up at 5 star accommodation, had all meals paid for, and cabcharge vouchers to and from the motel supplied. He eventually got back to Brisbane with Virgin. Qantas are going to pay for the cost of the Virgin ticket, and his FF points will be adjusted to give him credit for the QFA flight he missed out on. He has also recieved notification that Qantas will provide him with a free point to point return trip to a destination of his choice within Austrlia or New Zealand.
Overall, he's pretty satisfied at how he's been treated by Qantas, whilst admitting that, for someone who needed to connect to say, a cruise ship, would have been pretty stuffed by Qantas' actions.
