So you're over 70 and you're prepared to take your chances with Covid ?

    That's quite heroic of you.

Trouble is, there's a whole lot of people that don't want to see their elderly ( or other ) family members die a pretty miserable death from Covid. Going on the Swedish numbers, we would see many thousands of people die. Maybe in the range of 10-15-20 thousand.
Then there's the effect on the rest of the community. It's not just the elderly that are getting quite ill.

Further to that, as we've seen in aged care, Covid appears to be particularly deadly. If it were let to run free through our clearly poorly managed aged care homes, our hospitals would be overwhelmed with Covid patients thus interrupting the rest of the health system for everyone else.

While I somewhat agree with you on the quality of life for some in aged care, it is a modern phenomena that we have created ourselves.

We are simply living too long. Our rapid improvement in medical technology and health care means that people that 40 years ago might have died in their 60's or 70's are now living another 20 or 30 years.
One could argue that people can remain pretty active in their sixties or even early 70's but mostly activity drops off after that. You have to wonder about quality of life once mobility is lost. Hopefully technology will help in that area going forward.

Also, many people don't want to be a burden on their families and want to do their own thing in their later years. The selfishness can go both ways in many cases.

We also don't have the family culture that some other countries do where generations of families live together. And the reason for that is because they can afford not to.

Times are changing and I suspect you are wanting to hang on to the past a bit. While there are some attractive features of the past, especially when you look back at them, they don't necessarily fit today.
