The longer it goes, the better it looks, yes, more complex deal. If it falls over at last minute, then a rights issue would suffer from What Might Have Been syndrome, so that makes it more likely all parties concerned see the outcome as in their best interests.
So the million dollar question is what deal is on the table. Could ConocoPhillips be considered "new investors"? Are they acquiring a big chunk to resolve funding or buying the whole company, or is there an up identified party the "new investor" ?
And who really has GS's dollar? Suspect that motel provides alternate services...
