It is also likely that the 500 tonnes will not be reached anyway. Some banks are reluctant to sell and some banks are eager to buy. They don't want to be seen doing a Gordon Brown and giving away their country's wealth.
Selling off the family gold is limited and short-sighted. The gold won't be replaced.
