THE time has come for the leaders of the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) and the landowners of Panguna to discuss with Bougainville Copper Ltd issues concerning the re-opening of the mine. The ABG must accelerate the assessment and feasibility of the move. It does not have access to sufficient funds to run the region. It is only appropriate that we must discuss all the possibilities. At its height, Panguna mines was generating revenue of up to K300 million a year for the PNG Government. The ABG’s structure that we have created is a monster that needs to be fed, otherwise, we will not be able to effectively make our provincial government system work, let alone keep it alive.
