I do agree with you that timing is everything when speculating on shares. Perhaps the management was not top notch but they were definitely not a bunch of crooks like so many other turned out to be. I think its unfortunate that the t/o happened when it did because if the underlying commodity prices rose then MDL's valuation would have become much more than $350m.
You also forgot to mention that MDL spun out TGZ, so shareholder gained from that company if they held them at the right time. Unfortunately they chose a poor management team to run TGZ and it took far too long for the gold mine to turn around, especially in the face of weak gold prices.
I have nothing to complain about. Back in 2007 I sold out my small holding for a loss once I realised MDL would need to raise more funds via the issue of new shares. I traded MDL after the GFC for an OK profit in percentage terms, but should have bought a lot more of them. I then moved onto TGZ rather than MDL and had a reasonable amount of success there once I accepted that management was pretty weak. I only bought back into MDL in 2015 when the share price was 22 cents (only 52k shares) and I think we all had the opportunity to do well here if we just waited.
I think MDL management have achieved far more than 99% of the other small resources players, but as always whether or not an individual makes a profit will depend upon their speculation strategy.
loki (no complaints from me)
