Something a lot of people don't realise is that much of Eastern Australia is actually underlain by coal. The entirety of southern and central Qld for a start. Large parts of eastern NSW and much of Victoria too.

But as with miners, UCG companies will start with the shallower deposits first - those just out of the economic range of mining. So most UCG projects will start out around the edges of coal mining regions like the Hunter, Bowen, Surat, etc.
