Titan Hydrogen is revolutionising hydrogen use in transport.

[*] While others are trying to find ways to cut the cost of hydrogen in transport, Titan Hydrogen is solving the problem with two game-changing technologies that improve fuel economy and slash greenhouse gas emissions.

Titan Hydrogen is close to commercialising a fuel enhancement system that is installed into trucks, buses, trains and power generators to upgrade traditional diesel engines to cost-saving, emissions-reducing, hydrogen hybrid engines.

But that’s not the only trick it has in the bag, with a new hydrogen fuel cell technology aimed at substantially increasing the driving range of a vehicle also advancing towards commercialisation.

The Hydrogen Council – a global CEO-led initiative of 92 leading energy, transport, industry and investment companies – estimates that hydrogen could be as cost competitive as conventional transport options by 2030.

For heavy-duty trucks and long-range segments in particular, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are emerging as a complementary solution to battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The Hydrogen Council believes FCEVs can achieve breakeven with diesel for heavy-duty long-haul transport by 2028 if hydrogen can be made available for $US4.50 per kilogram (including hydrogen production, distribution and refuelling station costs) at the pump.

By 2030, it is expected there will be around 4.5 million FCEVs on the road, with China, Japan and Korea leading the charge.

Titan says its easy-to-install fuel enhancement system allows hydrogen to be used in diesel engines with minimal installation, minimal outlay and without the need to replace the engine’s entire fuel system.

Extensive testing in laboratories in Germany and other countries has shown the technology can deliver significant cost savings and emissions reductions, according to Titan.

By injecting hydrogen into diesel-powered vehicles, fossil fuels are burned more completely, resulting in an up to 45 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The technology also reduces diesel usage, and therefore costs, by up to 30 per cent.

Reshaping the hydrogen fuel cell market

Titan’s new hydrogen fuel cell technology, meanwhile, is designed to effectively double the driving range of a vehicle.

It will enable a fuel cell to produce more electricity from the same amount of hydrogen, reducing the cost per kilometre and making hydrogen cheaper than any other fuel source, Titan says.

The company is aiming to complete development by November 2021.
