The Hertz situation is not as straightforward as EVs being unpopular and a quick google search does a pretty good job of explaining it. Mostly not applicable to private ownership.
It is worth noting that a lot of the articles on EV sales being below forecast are referencing US markets, which see a very limited EV range available tldue to protectionist policies to support legacy manufacturers. I wouldn't want an EV made by ford or GM either!
