I have a different analogy and way to look at it.
Some companies develop their own software/applications internally because they are relatively easy to develop or they have the expertise i.e. a data analytics company might develop their own analytics software.
However this same company will buy software that they don't have the capability to develop inhouse due to the complexity involved and/or because someone else can already do it better (and has been qualified by many other customers) i.e. Saas applications such as Oracle ERP, Salesforce CRM.
Northvolt have the capability to manufacture cathode. Perfect.
But I see nowhere that suggests they have the capability to manufacture coated anode. It is a different beast and has taken Talga many years and specialist scientists to perfect. @Blue swims can talk to the complexity much better than I can.
So Northvolt will buy directly from the coated anode supplier rather than try re-invent the wheel at an extremely high cost and time effort.
