Pretty bloody good actually! The UK was at 42% renewable energy on 2020. Scotland is at 100%.
But seriously why can solar/wind/wave + battery not power a city? Do you think the electrons are somehow inferior?
Quite the opposite, what we need is a low levelised cost of energy, and despatchable power.
Solar has pretty much the lowest levelised cost of energy and batteries are about the ultimate form of quickly despatchable power.
Coal on the other hand is no longer the cheapest, and sucks for being able to respond quickly.
If you had to start from scratch right now and arrived in Australia to a totally undeveloped land and had to build and power a city, you would use battery backed solar, no doubt.
