Yes my gut feeling is yr right, but I’m no engineer. There’s probably quite a few reasons, the main I can see is aluminium has twice the resistance to copper ,so coating in graphene solves that issue.
Graphene could be a thermal regulator, stop galvanic corrosion , stress fatigue…
The weight savings in aluminium wire would be substantial. The conductivity I’ve heard would be about the same for half the mass.
Reluctance motors are gaining some traction ( ha ha ) in R&D , with a few companies about trying different approaches. One I’ve followed for a year or so is AEM( advanced electric machines). Focussing on truck motors (with aluminium looms). Trucks consume a lot of copper and also would include permanent magnets in use in current traction motors.
Dont use graphene as far as I know though.
