    Unfortunately privatisation is very difficult now. The original concept involving Fibre to everyone made it a basic utility like electricity which could have been sold to superannuation funds for example as a regulated piece of infrastructure. Perhaps like APA which has been very profitable.

    But now any decision to extend fibre etc might need government support and would be very political. The non-fibre bits are also pretty useless apart from the monopoly they'd confer. Regulated pricing also a nightmare.

    No one would buy the nbn without guaranteed relief from the ACCC on pricing and services in which case we might all be paying $120/month for third world nbn.

    Basically it's a mess and hard to overstate how royally Malcolm and Abbott trashed telecommunications in this country for a generation when they went the MTM route.

    "Abbott orders Turnbull to demolish nbn" was the headline on September 14, 2010.

    It seems they were both very successful and (as I've mentioned previously) it's also destroyed profitability in Telstra's Fixed Line business purely due to the baked in inefficiencies.
