Telstra sends 450 jobs to India

Telstra has struck a deal to send 450 software jobs to India in the biggest example yet of sending skilled Australian jobs to low-wage countries, the Australian Financial Review said.

The paper said the deal - expected to slash $957 million in costs - is part of a controversial plan to send 1500 jobs offshore in the next few years.

Telstra has described the deal as an extension of an existing outsourcing arrangement with IBM.

The contract announced is understood to be the first time IBM Australia has been forced to send work to India to meet cost targets in Australia.

However, AFR said IBM felt the pinch last year, when it lost a key part of its business with Telstra to Indian outsourcing company Infosys, which won a five-year $75 million project which put at risk 180 local software jobs.
