The ombudsman, akin to the Banking Industry Ombusdman are funded by the very organisations they investigate. I question their independence? 20 years ago One Tel provided a similar level of service Telstra are now guilty of in my drastic situation now. I lost that one with the TIO, they found in One Tel's favour. I questioned the independence and integrity of the TIO and lost again. How could anyone be independent when they are funded by the very people they investigate? In that instance we had a mass of STD phone calls to Egypt, Israel, Africa, and half of the middle east for a four figure sum on the bill!!! One Tel went down the gurgler about 2 months later due to a mass of billing errors. I wouldn't know anyone in the middle east? Their billing system was about as handy as Telstra's support service is today. In a senior treasury role I had 20 years ago I raised with the ANAO (Oz audit office) an independence question of the big accounting firms auditing their own work with GST industry funding in GST education delivery and then audit their own work for millions of dollars of fed funding. I questioned the independence factor - how can you audit your own work? It went to the top of treasury and govt and came back "there are firewalls". I lost again. A few months later Enron and WorldDotCom fell over and auditor independence was found as flawed. I then had the opportunity of a smirk and reminded a few Treasury officials there had been a precedent to this. So my confidence levels with the TIO I am afraid are about the same level as they are with Telstra.
