Next is accumulation chart for Macquarie Securities for the period of 2020-2025.
What this chart shows and how it's calculated?
The accumulation chart visualizes broker trading patterns over the 2020-2025 period. Here's how it works:Every day, numerous transactions flow through a broker - some clients are selling shares while others are buying. The broker data presented here tracks both buy volume and sell volume, along with their corresponding values.
When we subtract the sell value from the buy value for a given day, we get what's called the "net value." This net value reveals whether clients of a specific broker (like Macquarie, for example) bought more than they sold or vice versa. When clients buy more than they sell, they're accumulating shares, which typically indicates positive sentiment toward that stock.
By plotting these net values (or volumes) over time, we create the accumulation chart you see below. This visualization shows the dynamic pattern of share accumulation or distribution by a particular broker (or group of brokers) over an extended period, overlaid on the stock's price action. This allows us to clearly identify when and where brokers accumulated or distributed shares relative to price movements.
I've noticed that some traders don't immediately grasp what this chart represents, which is why I wanted to provide this additional explanation. In my experience, this visualization offers incredibly insightful information for traders. Personally, I find great value in exploring the trading patterns of various brokers, as it often reveals institutional sentiment that isn't obvious from price action alone.
As for the chart above, we can see that clients of Macquarie Securities (which is an institutional broker) started to accumulate a lot in early 2024 and continue doing it now.
Here is accumulation/distribution chart for Taylor Collison. They've been selling along the way - probably because they participated in CRs earlier so now they're just slowly distributing shares.
Here is the chart that I look at first. This is combined accumulation/distribution chart for 4 retail brokers combined including CommSec of course - (CommSec, AIEX, CMC Markets and Wealthhub). If retail brokers are buying then someone is selling to them. This someone is professional brokers, like Taylor Collison. At the moment, we can see that retail brokers continue to accumulate shares. Since 2020, about 12M shares have shifted from professional to retail investors.
However, there were periods - like in 2022 - when retail investors were selling to a group of professional investors, indicating strong buying pressure from professionals before the price started to surge from the $10 level.
Here is another chart that I like to watch - this is combined accumulation by 7 investment banks - (Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Macquarie, Merrill Lynch, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, UBS) - basically, it's a subset of professional brokers. A very powerful subset of brokers. As you can see, investment banks have been accumulating shares of TLX over the last few years and acquired more than 45M shares from other professional brokers like Taylor Collison or Wilsons Advisory who funded the company at earlier stages.
So, if we zoom in to the last 6 months, we can see that accumulation by investment banks has slowed down and is almost neutral now. It has happened before of course, but still something to pay attention to in the current market conditions.
