Collie battery projects: CATL and Power Electronics win contracts totalling $1 billion for green energy future

Contracts totalling $1 billion have been inked for two massive battery projects central to WA’s green energy transition, with work on both expected to be operational before the end of 2025.
The Cook Government used the May Budget to announce plans for a 500-megawatt Collie battery — one of the biggest in the world — as well as a 200MW expansion of the existing Kwinana Big Battery.
Chinese manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has won the contract to supply the liquid-cooled battery systems that will be used at both sites, while Spanish multinational Power Electronics will provide the inverters.
Premier Roger Cook said the $1 billion spend represented “a major and important investment” in WA’s “cleaner, reliable and affordable energy future”.
“Battery energy storage systems will play a key role in our decarbonisation plans, storing excess renewable energy generated in the day and discharging during times of high demand,” he said.
“We’re putting Western Australia on the path to becoming a global green energy superpower — which is good for jobs, good for the environment, and will keep our economy strong into the future.”
Construction has already begun on stage two of the Kwinana Big Battery, with the 200MW expansion expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Once operational, it will add 800 megawatt hours of energy storage to WA’s primary energy grid, the South West Interconnected System.

The Collie battery is even bigger at 500MW with 2000 megawatt hours of storage.
Construction on that project is expected to finish before the end of 2025 and create up to 500 jobs.
Both batteries will be owned and operated by Synergy and the $1 billion in contracts announced on Tuesday are part of what is anticipated to be a $2.3 billion total spend on the projects.
The Cook Government last year announced plans to phase out the use of Synergy’s remaining coal-fired power stations by 2030, setting the clock running to find a replacement for the reliable baseload power those plants provide.
The large-scale batteries are designed to soak up excess solar and wind generation during the middle of the day — when demand for electricity is typically lowest — and pump it back into the grid in the evening peak periods.
Both Synergy’s Kwinana and Collie batteries are designed to discharge their maximum output over four hours.
Energy Minister Bill Johnston said CATL and Power Electronics were both world-leading firms in the green energy space.
“I would like to congratulate Synergy for securing these important partnerships, setting Western Australia apart as a leader in the global energy transition,” he said.

When announcing the phase out of coal-fired generation last June, the Cook Government estimated $3.8 billion in total investment would be required to build 4000-megawatt hours of storage and 410MW of new wind generation.
Pumped hydro was also raised as a potential source of storage and Synergy continues to investigate the feasibility of projects in WA, including in the Collie region.
Earlier this year French firm Neoen — one of the biggest renewable energy companies in the world — began construction on a 1 —gigawatt battery in Collie that will reportedly cost $2 billion in total.
The first stage, to be online by the end of the year, will have 219MW capacity with 877 megawatt hours of storage.
