Moving 500kt of waste, even low impact, back to inland Australia, does sound like a lot now that I read this for a second time.
From pumping water into Darwin harbor to shipping that amount of waste over a thousand km every year, surely the cost & visuals would have had me wondering if this was the only way.
The trains would have been going back any way, but thinking in terms of the 106T iron ore rail cars x 236 for approx 29,500 T that you see every day all day in Pt Hedland, that's 17 fully laden trains worth a year, or put another way, around 2 x the Iron Ore Super Carriers - a lot if all in one place.
