Thanks to @hotdiggeydog, I did listen to the interview with PB and HW again and rethought my query.

In regard to VRFB, PB said that batteries ranging in size from that of a fridge up to the size of a container will be possible.

The main attraction with VRFB is that it can replace high cost and polluting diesel generation.

At the smaller end of the scale, stand alone power systems (SPS) can be used on ”off grid” or “edge of the grid” localities to provide cheap and reliable power.

Listening to the podcast reminded me that John Davidson has many years of experience in this field, through his previously owned company, EMC.

I won’t dwell on the difficulty he had commercialising that pioneer business back when renewable energy and storage was in it’s infancy. Suffice to say, it didn’t end well for the business and a lot of us shareholders.

Technically, the SPS model that EMC developed was very successful. Farms in in the Ravensthorpe area in WA trialled SPS after bushfires destroyed power lines.

WA now has a government led programme to roll out SPS throughout regional areas where power is not available or is unreliable.

Back then, all of the SPS used lithium batteries for storage.

I am thinking that small VRFB would easily replace lithium batteries for those situations.

Given that, John Davidson’s experience will be handy as he has gone through all the stages of gaining approvals and building SPSin remote parts of Australia.

Here is hoping his leadership in this venture is successful, as I believe SPS has a huge future in Australia and overseas.
