Carnarvon will have a source of 'green' energy available later this month.
Perth company Enerji Limited is building the Opcon Powerbox, which will convert waste heat to energy.
Carnarvon is the first place in the country to have the device installed and when it is operational in early April, it is expected to power more than 700 homes and businesses.
Enerji's Greg Pennefather says he hopes more powerboxes can be installed in regional centres across Australia.
"That's certainly our expectation," he said.
"Our objective is by the end of 2017 to have 120 powerboxes operational, so it's a very large market and 120 powerboxes on mine sites is reasonably modest in the scheme of things."
He says he is very happy with the progress being made.
"We have more work to do and we're on a tight time line but at the moment we're sticking to it," he said.
"For us to have the powerbox commissioned by the end of the month and up and exporting power to Horizon Power in Carnarvon by April ... it's very exciting times."
