I think if you read historical accounts from soldiers, flyers, mariners you will find that the flag and country were / are one in the same...

I will concede that the more recent conflicts and on going conflicts and the personnel who are involved may have a different understanding..but as my contact in this regards is limited it is hard for me to come to a conclusion on how they feel..
