The Indonesian Government has raised the price of fuel by about a third despite violent protests against the move in Jakarta this week.

The new price regime went into effect at midnight last night

Record world crude oil prices have pushed Indonesia's Government to cut fuel subsidies, with the effect of raising the average price of fuel by 28.7 per cents.

Millions of Indonesians living on less than $2 a day will be the hardest hit.

One-off Government cash transfers to the poor worth $1.5 billion are intended to offset that impact.

The price of fuel in Indonesia was increased by 126 per cent in 2005.

Here are the proposed changes per liter:

Premium Fuel with 88 octane: increase from Rp 4.500 to Rp 6.000
Diesel Fuel: increase from Rp. 4.300 to Rp 5.500
Kerosene Fuel: increase from Rp 2.000 to Rp 2.500

1A$ = ~ 8,900IRp so fuel costs about 60 cents a litre there but the government spends ~15% of the national budget subsidizing it to get it this low as do most of the Asian countries.

The current unsubsidized and untaxed cost per litre in Singapore is ~ A$1.00
