I shouldn't say "we don't know", because there may be some people who do know. "I don't know" is more accurate. I just read widely across different religions and philosophies, try to see common threads, aborb, dissect, accept, reject, critisize, discuss and try to stay open. A lot of what I read is rejected, and for the most part, I work with probabilities - much like trading. In terms of how I try to go about real understanding (as opposed to probable conjecture), I meditate. This practice has been helpful so far. There's a few things that I've come to understand with a high degree of confidence, but not much in the scheme of things.
