    You are correct, but it was the rise of settled agriculture which ended hunter gatherer egalitarian land ownership. You can read Louis Henry Morgan or indeed Friedrich Engel's "The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State", the hunter gatherers were essentially matriarchal but settled agriculture gave rise to property and the need for inheritance, and patriarchal lineage was born, and the monogamous nuclear family.
