some clarification is needed
McAurther river has been oprating since 1996 and supplies 3% of the worlds zinc.
It was a underground operation and the expansion is to open cut mine, and divert the river aprox 5 kms.
the previous owner (MIM ) negotiated the deal re royalties with the previous CLP government in the NT
Back in 1996 the NT was a basket case and broke so any development was given the green light regardless of costs one only has to view the history of the Mt Todd Gold mine to understand the development at all cost approach
They pay royalties to the local population and Booroolloo needs the mine as does the NT
Fishing is still good in the Mc Aurther river and the diversion is aprox 60 kms from the mouth were the river entrs the gulf
Century would have more of an environmental impact than Mc Aurther river
So the mine will not trash the zinc price
they pay royalties to the local population
and create over 300 direct jobs in the Territory
me thinks its a good move
