I've got no objection to the expansion but it has to be done on a level playing field with Australian companies. They need to meet the same environmental standards and pay the same royalties and taxes, regardless of previous agreements - this is effectively a new development.
I don't think Howard understands the broader implications of these things, when he rushes to declare Australia open for business. Another example was the FTA which, it is now becoming clear, is a big winner for the US, not so for us.
On the self-interest point, do you know how much the expanded mine will be producing?
