Back in 2021 Joe Biden created a new public holiday, June 19 or Juneteenth, to recognise the day after the Civil War when it was announced that all slaves were now free. This allowed Independence Day, July 4 to be retained whilst granting a second national day to acknowledge the horror of slavery.
An OpEd in today's Aus suggests something similar could be adopted here. That Australia Day, Jan 26 be retained to afford the majority of Australians a day to celebrate our success. Yet also another public holiday be created to recognise the impact of settlement on our indigenous. The suggestion being that day could be the 1967 referendum date granting aboriginals equal rights in the Constitution.
Works for me, though I'm unsure whether the perpetually aggrieved would agree.
