I think by now all the push for more extreme no smoking propaganda is only hardening the attitudes of smokers who are sick of being patronised to. It has become a religious puritanism rather than a health message now. The message is: drinking is fine, overeating is fine, harming yourself in extreme sports or stunts is fine, but if you smoke you are a fair target for righteous citizens. We will show you images of hell each time you smoke. Society always needs a scapegoat, a target for prejudice, we have run out of the usual suspects but we can all agree that smokers are bad and evil. It is a nice and simple demarcation, like black skin used to be. Unfortunately with each new extreme picture and propaganda, I think it will serve to entrench attitudes of "up yours" amongst smokers. We do not support harm minimisation of smokers, which at this stage of things I think would be more useful than outright condemnation.
