Xerxer - The bluegen doesn't generate enough electricity for spikes in usage. The unit has a peak output of 1.5kW, that's 1500 watts. As soon as you run the vacuum cleaner (2000-2500W) you need to draw additional electricity of the grid.

The reason the people interviewed had no electricity bill is because they are getting paid for the excess that is put into the grid.

Standalone is just not feasible, unless you set up banks of batteries to store the electricity, and then you need to be on mains gas anyway!

These are meant to be mass produced units that seek to replace conventional electricity generation. Mass market item, not niche item.
