I think you are taking that statement a little out of context, if you look at the whole paragraph I mentioned, they said that the previous year result was achieved through heavy promotional discounting (with a negative flow on effect to subsequent sales), whereas this year they did less and maintained their sales rankings / market position etc. Like you said - the 11/11 event matters less about sales and more about rankings etc. so it seems less likely to jeopardise sales for the rest of the year.
