Great point and a reason long term investors should get their stock certificates in hand. If you hold the certificate, a shorter must pay you to borrow your stock. If your broker holds the stock, they get paid to loan your shares to be sold short. Keep in mind short sales are artificial supply that must be repurchased to close out the position.
