On further reading I would like to comment on this sentence in the article:
"Arguably the radiation of this waste is low – and further backed up in this IAEA report (page 20) – but the reality is, if so low, why not process in Australia in the first place?"
There were many reasons:
In Malaysia water is plentiful although there were problems with supply last year.
Labour is cheaper in Malaysia and Lynas was able to pay employees at the LAMP a very good salary.
Electricity is cheaper in Malaysia.
Lynas' customer base is closer to Malaysia.
In my research of Lynas history I have never read anywhere that Australia has refused Lynas on the grounds of the radioactivity of materials.
