I'm a bit more optimistic. The earth is a self correcting system, we shape up or we die off. The earth goes on. If intelligence has a purpose, it's to move life off planet. The things we need to learn to make that happen are the things we need to learn to live on our planet in a sustainable manner. We'll get there.
