gassin makes a good point.
I have strong memories of being unable to short companies (especially banks) in the times of the GFC.
Simple truth is, a free market does not require off book transactions, nor does it require anything more complex than buying and selling of shares.
Watching the 4 Corners pogram last night on the Chinese banking situation and how their off book loans are the next hyper GFC time bomb reminded me that transparency is only the enemy of those who want to operate in the dark.
