Regulators are well known to commit to ineffective measures to please the masses - like ban shorting. Check out the relative performance of exchanges during the GFC that had shorting banned, against those that didn't.
What do the anti-shorting brigade have to say against punters who prefer minis or other derivatives to bet on downward prices? In that situation the underwriter has to cover, usually immediately, and usually by buying scrip on the opposite side of the bet. If you use those products are you exempt from anti-shorting discrimination or not?
