A Cape York bauxite mine will bring substantial economic benefits to Qld, the government says.
The Queensland government has granted three mining leases for a multi-million dollar Cape York bauxite mine.
The leases for the $35.8 million Bauxite Hills Mine project have been granted to Metro Mining, allowing it to begin shipments of the ore which is refined into aluminium, early next year.
Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Anthony Lynham said the mine would bring "substantial economic benefits to Queensland".
"The Palaszczuk Government has worked hard to grow Queensland's resources sector in a responsible and sustainable manner and we are now reaping the rewards of that work," Dr Lynham said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Our focus on job creation and the right framework for resources exploration and production, balanced with strong environmental protections and public consultation, and is delivering results."
The mine will employ 200 people with a 30 per cent indigenous workforce target, and is expected to produce approximately two million tonnes of bauxite a year initially, eventually ramping up to six million tonnes in four years time.
