Too great a toll
Virginia motorists have been sold out to Transurban with the charges imposed by and agreed to by Richmond politicians, many of whom will probably use the lanes only occasionally.
As construction of the lanes moved along, I had many questions about the project, but there never was any transparency! Somebody, please answer these questions!
1. Since only nine miles of the HOT lanes are new and 20 miles were there before, why is Transurban allowed to charge a toll on 29 miles of roadway?
2. What Virginia agency or department agreed to the toll charge of $.20 to $.80 per mile? This is crazy. Unless Transurban is paying for gas, insurance and depreciation for our cars, a fee of $.25 per mile during HOV hours and $.15 per mile on off-peak would be much fairer and one the average driver could afford.
The proposed charges were accomplished behind closed doors without any public input or a referendum.
3. Which local politicians took money from Transurban? Bill Howell, as Speaker of the House, should gather up a list of names and have it ready, as there could be a federal corruption investigation coming out of this mess.
