Australia's lastvolcanic eruption was in 1949 about 8 Km out to sea off Warnambool,Victoria. There is a place in NW Tasmania where there are microtremors related to volcanic activity under Bass Strait every day.Volcanoes have beenintermittently active on the eastern seaboard of Australia over thelast 60 million years and the last on shore volcanic activity was asrecent as 3,400 years ago in western Victoria. This vent is stillopen (I have been down it).The eastern Australianvolcanoes have left the six largest expanse of flood plain basalt inthe world. It stretches from northern Queensland to western Victoriaand the odds are that one day it will start up again.
