Of course we wouldn't (have the debt). But how many would be out of work as the unemployment rate went through the roof? The conservatives have never given much of a stuff about how many people are out of work, how many people are thrown out of their homes, or the "idle" who can't provide for their families. They have the with-all to sit through troubled times in relative comfort. We saw this in the last depression when they fought like hell against Roosevelt's New Deal. Howard, and his lousy little petrol bowser Methodist view of how the world should be would have made for bad times for many many Australians whilst all the time he would (like Mr. Abbot is at the moment) bleat about the virtue of frugalness
