SBS - 13/5/10 The government says Tony Abbott must either 'put up or shut up' when he releases the coalition's response to the budget tonight.
(Tanner?)He said the opposition's claims that the government's budget figures are wrong are 'fraudulent', claiming under plans already released by the Coalition, their figures would leave Australia A$15.7b dollars in the red. The coalition has repeatedly said the the government's budget is over reliant on mining and is based on an assumption that resource prices will remain high.
Tanner said he wants to know how the opposition will finance the additional spending he's committed to, but hasn't, according to Tanner, said how he'll pay for it. He said he wants to know how Abbott plans on opposing the Resource Super Profits tax cuts , while financing tax cuts for small business and other areas which the government plans to pay for with the additional revenue.
Thirdly, he demanded to know if there was a commitment to extend a two per cent cap on an increase in spending. And finally, Tanner wanted a guarantee that the coalition will maintain the services that the government has committed to until 2013/14.
" It's put up or shut time " , Tanner went on.
" The debt and deficit campaign is dead ".
" Does Tony Abbott ", he asked , " have the gusto to bury the corpse and give it a decent funeral...or is he a giant risk to Australia? ".
" Abbott ", Tanner said, " is like a dodgy American evangelist, preaching chastity in the day while heading to cheap motels at night ".
This morning, Opposition Finance Spokesman Andrew Robb said Abbott will " clearly use tonight to demonstrate we will tackle with conviction the reckless spending that's being going on, the waste and mismanagement of this government ".
