Ken while that is admirable it doesn't by any stretch of the imagination make Abbott a creditable alternative pm.
The attributes of a creditable alternative pm would be intelligence, articulate, charismatic, vision and other statesman like qualities. Abbott has none of that, he may have been a Rhodes Scholar but he doesn’t come across as one.
Turnbull on the other hand who is also a Rhodes Scholar does demonstrate the above attributes and you would not question his qualification, his self made success speaks for it’s self.
