Great find Tazza. The article from the Journal of Cancer Therapy makes for an interesting read. Talking about the photo-reactive chlorophyll derivative...
"... initially introduced into the Russian and South Korean Pharmacopoeias with the corresponding marketing authorizations received in 2006 and 2008, on the basal cell skin carcinoma PDT protocol. Phase I-II clinical trials led in 2002-2005 showed no side effects, a good tolerability by patients and a high clinical anti-tumor efficacy."
This was an earlier PDT protocol. It would be safe to assume that the "Next Generation" PDT that Cho Group and IVX are working on will be even more effective.
A quote from the first NIH US Government article... The article expresses the lack of any new innovation in the standard chemical treatments for cancer and welcomes additional research and funding in areas such as PDT for it is showing the most promise for the next breakthrough in cancer treatment.
"Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a clinically approved, minimally invasive therapeutic procedure that can exert a selective cytotoxic activity toward malignant cells. The procedure involves administration of a photosensitizing agent followed by irradiation at a wavelength corresponding to an absorbance band of the sensitizer. In the presence of oxygen, a series of events lead to direct tumor cell death, ...Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has the potential to meet many currently unmet medical needs."
In the second NIH US Gov article there is praise for PDT leaving people intact (no knives!!) , preserving fertility and allowing for normal pregnancies to take place.
"Younger patients tend to opt to receive treatment that preserves fertility, and PDT may be such a treatment (7). Therefore, attention has focused on the usefulness of PDT in that regard. Unlike conventional approaches, PDT leaves the cervix intact, has a high cure rate, and does not hamper pregnancy or delivery ..."
The down-rampers may have dug up some dirt on PDT, but there's quite a bit of positive news about PDT to easily counter such negative spin.
As always, it's important to do your own research before jumping to conclusions, or panicking for that matter.
