In my former life as a mining engineer for one of the big boys I used to video conference with colleagues all over the world from our Pilbara offices, and the fibre that ran to our mine sites joined the Telstra fibre that already runs across the country.
Now they run autonomous haul trucks (trains are coming) and that all goes back via fibre links to control rooms in Perth.
Video conferencing is real and happening all the time.
